Asylum seekers ‘excluded from financial system’ by banks in Ireland

Mostafa Darwish Fawaz – University of Limerick

Asylum seekers struggling to open bank accounts in Ireland, I am an immigrant (former asylum seeker) and I have lived the experiences myself so I made a story about this issue, which is one of many issues that the asylum seekers are facing in Ireland. I got views of 3 asylum seekers, got responses from two banks plus the central bank of Ireland and from the Department of Justice that has the responsibility to look after asylum seekers.

Since my story went viral in Ireland, the situation changed for the better and local media such as Irish Times spoke about the same issue and many asylum seekers told me later that they opened bank accounts.
